Mindfulness in Clinical Practice - Burrell Behavioral Health

Mindfulness in Clinical Practice

mindfulness

Join us for a two day event of expert advice on the subject of mindfulness. Much attention has been given in recent literature to the concept of mindfulness and mindfulness-based interventions. But what is mindfulness? How can it be applied to clinical interventions? How should a clinician go about becoming competent to use this approach?
The purpose of this workshop is to familiarize clinicians with the theories and research base on mindfulness, mindfulness-based interventions and practice, and to identify ways to gain knowledge and competency in applying these concepts and intervention strategies in their own practices. Clinicians will also learn how mindfulness can be used for their own self-care.

Basically, mindfulness involves training the mind to work more wisely with thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations. For the therapist, this means being more fully present and aware of what is going on in the therapy session. For the client, this means being more consciously aware of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors within the session and throughout the day. Use of mindfulness helps to discard old, unconscious, maladaptive patterns.

The workshop will provide an overview of current evidence-based mindfulness interventions, which includes Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). We will also discuss how mindfulness techniques can be used with individual clients to help deal with stress, anxiety, depression, cravings, and chronic pain.

This workshop will include lecture, discussion, and guided practice of mindfulness techniques.

  • Define mindfulness as it is used in clinical practice.
  • Describe the role of thoughts in perpetuating stress, anxiety, and depression.
  • Describe how mindfulness relates to the principles of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
  • Explain the structure of the Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) program.
  • Explain the differences in group process in MBCT vs. CBT groups.
  • List the evidence-based interventions that utilize mindfulness techniques.
  • Practice mindfulness-based techniques to help clients de-center from the narrative of negative thoughts and emotion.
